This weekend saw your USF Ice Bulls make the long trip up to Pelham for the Alabama Showcase. On Friday evening the Ice Bulls faced the University of Alabama for what turned out to be a disappointing start to the weekend. Despite taking the lead with a deflected power play goal from your number 1 star of the weekend, Andrew Silvers, the Ice Bulls were trailing 3-1 going into the second period. The USF Ice Bulls came out on top for the second period running when returning forward DJ Guggi, on his first game back from a long term injury, linked up with Matt Meyer and Mike Canacari to finish off another well worked power play goal and halve the deficit. Alabama managed to hold on to their lead for the remainder of the game despite a 3rd power play goal midway through the third from Matt Meyer. The game ended 7-3 to Alabama.
Your USF Ice Bulls took back to the ice for their match with the University of Tennessee on Saturday afternoon. The USF Ice Bulls started off on the back foot by going 2-0 down early on in the 1st period but with the help of a hat trick from the man of the hour, defenseman Joe Heckes, and an additional goal from Justin Lacy, the USF Ice Bulls managed to claw it back. With the closing of the 1st period, the USF Ice Bulls were in a strong position with a 4-2 lead. Matt Meyer continued his goal streak to make it 5-2 before University of Tennessee started to pile on the pressure and managed to score three goals and level the game at 5-5. The USF Ice Bulls didn’t waiver and kept their composure in the 3rd despite penalties being conceded by both teams throughout the period. With goals from Justin Lacy, Matt Francis and Andrew Silvers the game ended 8-5 to the Ice Bulls.
With an early start on Sunday, the USF Ice Bulls went up against a strong Christopher Newport university side in the Ice Bulls’ last game of the showcase. CNU came out on top with an early power play goal but USF Ice Bulls were forever nipping at their heels and answered back with a skillful goal from Justin Lacy to tie the game. Matt Cappucci kept up his great form with a spectacular stack the pads save to try and keep the Ice Bulls in the game but CNU continually pressed the Ice Bulls’ defense and made it 4-1 midway through the second. The USF Ice Bulls tried to gain momentum with a goal late in the second from Andrew Silvers but after a goalless 3rd period, the game finished 4-2 in the USF Ice Bulls’ second loss of the weekend.Three Stars of the Week: #3 - #24 Joe Heckes (3G, 1A, 4P) #2 - #22 Matt Meyer (2G, 3A, 5P) #1 - #9 Andrew Silvers (3G, 4A, 7P) Honorable Mention to #11 DJ Guggi who in his first weekend back scored one goal and had three assists.
The USF Ice Bulls will hope to take both the positives and negatives of the showcase into this weekend’s games, two W’s would be huge for the Ice Bulls. They host the University of Miami at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex both on Friday @ 9:00pm and then on Saturday @ 3:30pm. Come and cheer us on!
