Shootout in Fort Myers

A hard fought battle all game ended in a stalemate. Ice Bulls Forward #9 Ben Leonard had two goals while Goalie #31 Alex Miller made some huge saves to keep the Ice Bulls in the game. The USF defense stepped up and killed off some key penalty to force this game to Overtime then to the Shootout.

The Florida Golf Coast University (FGCU) Eagles got on the score board first with a Power Play (PP) goal, but #9 Ben Leonard quickly answered with a goal less than two minutes later. At the end of the First Period we were tied 1-1.

The Ice Bulls started the Second Period by taking a penalty which leads to a PP goal for FGCU, giving the Eagles a one goal lead. But the game was quickly tied again off the stick of forward #10 Luke Goyette. FGCU then took two penalties to give USF a minute long 5-on-3 PP. During the long PP #9 Ben Leonard scored his second goal of the game to give USF a one goal lead with 12 minutes left in the Second Period. USF then took two penalties to give the Eagles a long 5-on-3 PP, which the Eagles scored on to tie the game at three goals apiece. USF penalties lead to another long 5-on-3 PP for the Eagles but after some key defensive plays and saves the Ice Bulls stood tall and killed the penalties. At the end of the Second Period, we were tied 3-3.

The intensity carried over to the Third Period. FGCU took the lead seven minutes into the Third Period from a lucky shot that ended up in the back of the net. However, forward #11 DJ Guggi disapproved and scored a PP goal, to tie the game 4-4 with 10 minutes left. After a few key penalty kills by USF the Third Period ended 4-4, and we were heading to Overtime.

The five minute Overtime started with USF on a 4-on-3 penalty kill, after killing the penalty, we were back to 4-on-4 hockey. The rest of the period resulted in a few chances for each team but no goals or penalties. Overtime ended 4-4, which means we were heading to the Shootout, USF would go first followed by FGCU. During the Shootout, forward #3 Brian Schulker went first for USF but was denied by the post, after picking five hole. FGCU scored, next up for USF was forward #16 Andrew Silvers, the FGCU goalie made the save. Goalie #30 Alex Miller shut the door by making a great stick save on the FGCU player. It was up to forward #9 Ben Leonard to tie up the game and force another round, but unfortunately the FGCU goalie came up with a great save. The shootout ended 1-0, which gave the FGCU Eagles the 5-4 win.

The Ice Bulls next game is this Friday at the University of Florida Gators at 10:15pm, the game will be played in Orlando, at the RDV Sportsplex.
